Is Biden Stigmatizing Cannabis Use?
The Question of Where Biden Sits on Cannabis Has Global Implications – LPC
Robert Hoban has a beef about Biden’s beef with cannabis. His recent opinion piece in Forbes questions whether or not Biden has fallen for cannabis stigma. The way Hoban writes it, you have to wonder if Biden is stigmatizing cannabis use himself.
“(What’s going on) with Biden’s perspective on the cannabis plant? Does he blame his son Hunter’s substance abuse on cannabis? Unfortunately, Biden seems to be immersed in the ‘drug gateway conundrum’. This is sad because the gateway drug theory has been disavowed and debunked.”
The article starts out with the assertion that Biden fired five administration members due at least in part to past cannabis use. Hoban points out that even the FBI doesn’t take past use into consideration anymore. He also point to other instances of admitted cannabis use within the US government and security sections including Vice President Kamala Harris. This collection of facts seems to show Biden stigmatizing cannabis use.
“This move from the White House doesn’t make any sense,” Hoban writes. “The stigma and misinformation concerning the cannabis plant has been substantially reformed – and especially embraced by Democrats.” He refers to the fact that the Democrats’ own platform called for decriminalizing cannabis and expunging past criminal cannabis convictions.
What’s most mystifying though is that we are asking whether or not Biden is stigmatizing cannabis use in the first place. As more states legalize cannabis – never mind other countries around the world – the pressure is mounting on the US government. Yet Biden still hasn’t directly said anything about his cannabis policy.
Stigmatizing Cannabis Signals Indecision on One Side, Frustration on the Other – LPC
It seems inevitable that the US will legalize cannabis at the federal level. It may be just that Biden is, as Hoban puts it, behind the times.
“Perhaps Joe is ten years behind the curve. It’s time to wake and smell the coffee. This is a global industry that is generating billions in revenue, employing thousands of Americans, and capturing much needed tax dollars. Not to mention, cannabis reform and equity licensing programs can perhaps begin to remedy the decades of social and racial injustices that have been perpetuated by American drug policy.”
The US is at the brink of federal cannabis legalization, but Biden is hesitating at that last step. Stigmatizing cannabis then might be just part of old views on cannabis trying to hang on.
