Can the US learn from Canada's cannabis clarity?We’ve been saying that the Canadian cannabis market can be a blueprint for the US as it approaches federal cannabis legalization. Two cross-border analysts seem to agree. Professors Michael Armstrong of Brock University and Paul Seaborn of the University of Virginia recently called for cannabis clarity. In their opinion piece, “What the United States can learn from Canada’s cannabis clarity” they put forward three things the US can learn from the Canadian licensed producer system.

The opinion piece also points out other advantages of the Canadian system including our approach to cannabis research and the fact that legalization led to dropping cannabis prices. It also goes into some of the perceived disadvantages including plain-package marketing and cannabis protectionism.

“Cannabis policy isn’t easy — every option involves trade-offs. Canada proceeded in phases and now has a three-year head start at finding the best approach. Congress should begin that journey too,” the authors write.

That seemed like a slam dunk as more US states legalized cannabis use. However, with Biden himself lacking cannabis clarity, things may not be a straightforward as they seem.
