American Cannabis Legalization “in Strong Position”
US Congressman Says Despite COVID-19, Public Support Could Push Through American Cannabis Legalization – LPC
US congressman Earl Blumenauer of Oregon said that American cannabis legalization has more momentum than ever.
“We are in a stronger position than we’ve ever been,” Blumenauer said. “The performance of advocates and the industry is very, very strong. People want this. It’s not just public support at the polls. People depend on the product, on the service, on the impact it has in their communities and so it’s a terrific alignment of interests.”
Currently, all but two states (New Hampshire and Mississippi) have legalized hemp farming and production after it was legalized federally. Further, 33 in the US states have legalized medical cannabis and 11 of those fully legalized cannabis. Some had predicted that more states would have legalized it this year, which would add more support to American cannabis legalization. The COVID-19 outbreak has slowed those efforts down.
Some predicted that cannabis legalization would come to the US this year – but again, that was before COVID. However, Blumenauer said American cannabis legalization in the near term could come down to politics.
“It’s interesting to note that now a number of Republican senators find themselves in competitive re-election campaigns this fall, people that they thought were safe,” he said. “It’ll motivate voters… and set the stage for some action in the Senate.”
