Alberta LP Pushes for Farm-to-Table Cannabis Tourism
Edmonton-Area Parkland Flower Wants to Expand What’s Possible in Cannabis Tourism – LPC
Parkland Flower wants to promote itself like a winery, boosting farm-to-table cannabis tourism.
“People will travel to come see facilities like ours,” said Parkland Flower co-founder Kieley Beaudry. She envisions a whole cannabis experience including tours and a tasting room. Beaudry also sees hosting demonstrations to teach visitors how to care for home plants.
The only problem is, that level of farm-to-table cannabis tourism is illegal. Current provincial laws do not allow direct-to-consumer sales. Federal law is extremely stringent on cannabis advertising. That’s strangled cannabis tourism from the start.
But there have been ways around it. In Alberta alone, a tour company based in Calgary offered Alberta cannabis tours. Edmonton PotRentals used to advertise cannabis experiences for sale. But their abandoned website and Twitter feed suggest they are no longer in business.
Tourism aside, the whole farm-gate cannabis approach is something else that should be legalized to some extent. Craft cannabis and micro-cultivators like Parkland Flower thrive better with that one-on-one approach with consumers.
So far, the Alberta government seems to be leaving the door open to farm-to-table cannabis tourism. “(The government) will be examining the approach in other jurisdictions to help inform what future opportunities there may be in Alberta,” said Jerrica Goodwin, press secretary to Alberta’s Treasury Board and Finance.
Like any industry, the best way to grow is to connect with your potential customers. If it’s legal for breweries and wineries to sell direct-to-consumer, there is no reason why farm-to-table cannabis shouldn’t be too.
