Calagary-Based Cannanaskis Brings Alberta Cannabis Tourism to Kananaskis Country – LPC
Dave Dormer hopes to spark Alberta cannabis tourism with his new venture, Cannanaskis. This play on words company takes guests through Kananaskis country for a scenic drive and optional hikes. Dormer would also educate guests during the trip about the history of cannabis.
“I believe I’ll be the first commercially licensed and insured cannabis tour in Alberta,” Dormer said. “People aren’t going to go to Calgary for the cannabis, but they will come here for the mountains.”
It’s been a tough sell, even without the COVID pandemic wreaking havoc with the tourism industry lately. Traditional tourism doesn’t seem to like the idea.
“Tourism Calgary was very polite in rejecting this,” he said. “They want nothing to do with cannabis. There’s zero support.”
That’s not surprising. Traditional outlets have avoided cannabis tourism across Canada. The US has a strong stance against anyone in the cannabis industry, legal or not. Strict marketing laws are another reason. Still, there are some outlets. The Wiarton Bongspiel attracts out-of-town curling teams. Within Alberta cannabis tourism, there are cannabis experiences for sale in Edmonton.
He’s also hoping that farm-gate cannabis where tourists can sample directly from the LP could help Alberta cannabis tourism.
“I’m glad he’s at the forefront of doing it,” said Nathan Mison, chairman of the Alberta Cannabis Council. “When the rules change, he’ll be ahead of the game.”
