How can we help?
The Canadian licensed producer system is a system that designates legal cannabis producers (growers, processors, nurseries, etc.) in Canada. The system helps ensure that all cannabis producers provide a safe supply of cannabis and that no cannabis is diverted to the illegal market.
Dig a Little Deeper
The Canadian licensed producer system grew out of our country’s need for a safe, reliable supply of cannabis. Initially, this was to supply medical cannabis.
When the federal government first legalized medical cannabis, it grew its own supply for patients. However, demand quickly overwhelmed government capacity. The government turned to private growers to meet the needs of patients. It created a highly regulated licensing system to ensure safe cannabis and to ensure no cannabis was diverted to the illegal market.
Once Canada legalized cannabis for recreational use, demand grew exponentially once again. The Access to Cannabis for Medical Purposes Regulations Act was repealed in favour of the new Cannabis Act.
Many around the world see Canada’s legalization of cannabis and its licensed producers system as a success.
