Canadian Cannabis Legalization Blueprint in the UK?
British Think Tank Says Canadian Cannabis Legalization a Success – LPC
Transform, a think tank in the UK, has followed Canadian cannabis legalization for some time. It gave Canada a passing grade in terms of roll out in many key areas including the production/supply chain, social factors, and decriminalization.
“There have been a number of efforts at assessing our first year of legalization and beyond. Not all of them have been as positive as Transform’s evaluations,” said the opinion piece’s author, Bill Bogart. (Please see a link to the complete Winnipeg Free Press article below.)
That may be because Transform is focusing on the social measures of Canadian cannabis legalization, not necessarily the economic ones. This was Canada’s goal from the start. Health Canada designed the licensed producer system to protect Canadians, not maximize profits. Some critics complain that this led to slow cannabis sales, particularly in Ontario which only recently opened its retail cannabis market. However, for example, stricter regulations is also the reason there were fewer cases of vaping illness.
The article below also covers the amnesty portion of Canadian cannabis legalization. Canada included cannabis pardons as a crucial part of the Cannabis Act. Bogart suggests that this could lead to the decriminalization of all drug possession charges.
It’s heartening to see that despite the Canadian cannabis system’s flaws, some are seeing the benefits of a regulated system. Canadian cannabis legalization has focused on health and safety from the beginning, not just profits, and it’s made all the difference.
