Newfoundland Cannabis Producers Optimistic for 2021
Despite Ups and Downs, Retailers and Producers See Growth in the Future – LPC
Newfoundland cannabis producers are optimistic for a more positive 2021. Taylor Giovannini, president and CEO of Oceanic Cannabis and Coffee in Burin, NL, opened a drive-through cannabis and coffee shop. She said her plan is to make cannabis more accessible and ultimately address cannabis stigma.
“Whether you’re comfortable buying cannabis or not … the stigma does still exist, and I know a lot of people are resistant to go into an actual cannabis store,” she said.
BeeHighve president and CEO Rita Hall also sees growth in the local market. “It’s a good thing for the province, because we’re able to (create) local business and hire locally,” Hall said. She is clearly one of the Newfoundland cannabis producers optimistic for the future. “It will help drive the economy as local people hire local people.”
The picture in Newfoundland and Labrador may not be as rosy for the larger LPs. Canopy Growth planned a facility in the White Hills area which never opened. It also closed a facility in St. John’s. But they don’t see a pullout of a national LP to affect the provincial market too much.
“What I have to offer is very different than Canopy Growth,” Hall said. “They’re mass-producing. I’m growing in small batches, I’m growing differently, several unique strains.
“People are noticing a difference, I think.”
The media is focusing on the bad news stories of the Canadian cannabis industry lately. But you can find good news stories out there as well. That’s what Newfoundland cannabis producers are doing. LPs and production facilities may come and go – especially in a new start-up industry. The legacy of cannabis legalization will be a strong and vibrant market in the long run.
