Mexico Sets Medical Cannabis Regulations
Many See Medical Cannabis Regulations as a Step Towards Full Legalization – LPC
On January 12, 2021, Mexio’s President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador signed new medical cannabis regulations for the country. Now, pharmaceutical companies will be able to do medical research on cannabis products. However, that research will be strictly managed by Mexican health regulator, COFEPRIS.
“The standard of regulation is very, very high,” said Luisa Conesa, a lawyer and pro-cannabis activist. “(The regulation) is… aimed at pharmaceutical companies producing pharmaceutical derivatives of cannabis which are classified as controlled substances that need prescription.”
The new medical cannabis regulations also sets rules for companies sowing, cultivation, and harvesting cannabis in Mexico.
Officials originally signalled that Mexico may legalize cannabis last November. Advocates argued it would help reduce illegal market cannabis and, in turn, crime. There is precedent for that. Last September, legal cannabis sales in Canada surpassed illegal cannabis sales for the first time.
Current reforms including the new medical cannabis regulations would make Mexico the largest country by population to legalize cannabis.
