Hemp-Based Meat Substitute in the Works

New Vegan Option Use Hemp Seeds as Basis of Its Alt Meat Product – LPC

New Zealand Startup Craft Meat Company to Produce Meat From Hemp as Global Organisations Lobby to Lift Hemp BansA New Zealand-based start-up is working on a new hemp-based meat substitute. The Craft Meat Company already uses hemp seeds in its recipes for ground beef, burger, and sausage alternatives. Now, Craft wants to use hemp as its main ingredient.

“Most of our products already include some hemp for its nutritional value,” said Craft co-founder Kyran Rei. “The new meat analogue will be using hemp as its base. It will have a total consumable protein content that is higher than even that of animal-based protein sources.”

The company will sell its hemp-based meat substitute menu in New Zealand to start with. Hemp is still a controlled substance in many places in the world including Asia, one of New Zealand’s largest export markets. That could change though, said Keith Jones, President of the Canadian Hemp Trade Alliance.

“The global consensus is clear,” Jones said. “It is now time to remove hemp from the list of controlled substances around the world for the benefit of health-conscious consumers.”

According to the Vegonomist article, the global industrial hemp market size is expected to grow from $3.5 billion in 2019 to almost $19 billion by 2025.

The US legalized hemp in 2018, and Canopy Growth launched its First & Free hemp-derived CBD products there shortly after. However, given alt meat’s recent failings in the North American markets, it’s difficult to see how well a hemp-based meat substitute will do. Taste and processing methods seem to be the biggest hurdles. But if they can find a way around those issues, hemp may become a large cash crop.
