Jima Cannabis Opens “Local” Abbotsford Cannabis Store
Unique Retailer Takes Community Approach with Local Abbotsford Cannabis Store – LPC
Jima Cannabis, which promotes itself as a “BC-based recreational cannabis brand”, opened a new local Abbotsford cannabis store just in time for July 1. Although “local” may be obvious, by the looks of its marketing, Jima Cannabis takes a more local approach than most. Jima is a good example of how craft cannabis and small business can make a huge difference in Canada’s cannabis industry.
It starts with staffing. Of course, employees are all local as they are with most retail stores of any type. However, fast-growing companies often bring in non-local managers, at least in the beginning. Not so with Jima Cannabis. Its Abbotsford cannabis store will be managed by local manager Toby Atkinson.
Listening to local customers helps, too.
“We understand the responsibility we have as one of only four retail cannabis options in the city,” said Sherman Leung, head of retail operations. “We let that inform our customer service model. We will listen to our customers and curate our product line to their needs.”
That means the cannabis products you find in the Abbotsford cannabis store is not necessarily the ones you’ll find at Jima’s other BC locations. The locally conscious company searches out locally grown and small batch cannabis options that customers at that particular store want.
Jima’s Abbotsford Cannabis Store Wants to Become Part of the Fabric of the Community – LPC
Jima also works hard to become part of the fabric of the community. Its Abbotsford cannabis store, for example, will feature works by local artists. Jima created an ongoing outreach program that allows painters and photographers to display and sell their work in-store.
“We want to get to know the communities we’re a part of and find ways to give back. If we can use our storefront to support local artists we’re more than happy to do it,” said Jeff Prete, Jima’s president and general manager.
The store has special plans to welcome in local customers for its Grand Opening on Canada Day. Jima also brands itself as a lifestyle brand, and is active on social media at Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, Spotify, and TikTok.
Craft cannabis – and in turn, small cannabis retailers – have a lot of opportunity to change perceptions. Cannabis stigma is real. While large licensed producers are helping reduce that stigma somewhat, a more local approach will help make cannabis more familiar.
Working harder to become part of the community rather than a tucked-away, low-profile storefront seems to be the way to go. Even the artwork on Jima’s Abbotsford cannabis store shows that there is something different happening here. It’s an example of how craft cannabis – and independent cannabis retailers – can add local flavour and fit in better with the community around it.
