How Does Canada’s Licensed Producer System Reduce Crime?
Federal Minister of Safety Bill Blair said, “Cannabis doesn’t kill, but cannabis trafficking can.” Canada’s licensed producer system reduces crime in a number of ways. By legalizing the sale of cannabis, Canada can now:
- License and monitor cannabis production to ensure safe product (handled at the federal level)
- License and regulate cannabis retailers (handled primarily at the provincial/territorial level)
- Plan where and when cannabis can be sold (handled primarily at the municipal level)
The more accessible cannabis is through a legal system, the less likely people will be to buy through the illegal market. This in turn reduces crime associated with selling cannabis illegally including trafficking, gang violence, firearms, and other criminal offenses.
