Cannara Biotech – LP Spotlight
Cannara to Leverage Cheap Quebec Electricity and Large Facillity – LPC
Cannara Biotech isn’t wasting any time. After receiving its Health Canada licence for Cultivation, Processing, and Medical Sales (business to business), the company plans to plant right away. Chief operation officer Barry Laxer said Phase 1 of its new facility is ready for operations.
“What we have built is the most modern, 100 per cent indoor cannabis plant in Quebec,” Laxer told the Canadian Press. (Please see link to full article below.) “It’s a laboratory. It’s a factory. It is not a greenhouse.”
Although based in Montreal, Cannara’s facility is in Farnham 60 kilometres southeast of the city, in Quebec’s Eastern Townships. The 600,000+ square foot facility will be more than three times larger than the Bell Centre when completed in 2022. For a facility of that size, cheap Quebec electricity is one of the big draws for the company.
Cannara expects its first harvest this spring. Cultivation capacity will be up to an estimated 20,000 kilograms of cannabis per year at first. Cannara should hit its max capacity of 100,000 kilograms in three years.
Initially, Cannara will only be able to grow for the medical cannabis market. But, Laxer said, the company plans to apply for its recreational cannabis licence within five months.
“All of our planning is aimed at producing for the recreational market,” he said. “Our first goal is to start negotiating with the SQDC (Société quebecoise du cannabis, Quebec’s government-run cannabis retailer).”
Cannara’s Goals Are Quality, Consistency, and Efficiency – LPC
Cannara Biotech is entering a maturing cannabis market. However, if its claims are true, Cannara should have several competitive advantages. Cheaper electricity mentioned above is certainly a big plus.
But Cannara plans to make its mark in quality as well.
“Cannara is developing top-rated products for cannabis consumers of today as well as tomorrow,” according to the Cannara website. “Our state-of-the-art facility will allow us to build brands and products consumers love.”
Building in phases will help defer costs as it enters the market. This is a common strategy with several newcomers such as SugarBud Crafts Growers, an LP in Alberta.
Cannara said its operations will create approximately 100 jobs in Farnham. Currently, Cannara employs between 30 and 40 employees at its head office in Montreal and at its Farnham production facility.
