Global Partnership Will Advance Research into CBD Therapy for Athlete Injury Recovery – LPC

Aurora and UFC have partnered to research CBD therapy for injury recovery.

Aurora Cannabis has signed a deal with the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) to “significantly advance further clinical research” into CBD therapy. The UFC Performance Institute in Las Vegas, Nev. will host the research project.

“Since the day we opened the UFC Performance Institute, our primary goal was to offer UFC athletes the best possible training, nutrition, and recovery services,” said UFC president Dana White. He sees CBD therapy as part of that mission.

According to the institute, it has served more than 400 athletes in two years. The facility is a self-described “global leader in athletic performance research and provides support and educational services to athletes on health, well-being, nutrition, and injury prevention.”

“This partnership with Aurora is an extension of that goal,” White said. “We’re looking forward to collaborating with Aurora to find new ways to improve the health and safety of athletes who compete in UFC.”

Financial terms of the CBD therapy research deal were not disclosed.

The research won’t be breaking any American federal laws since the CBD therapy will be derived entirely from hemp. The US legalized hemp in December 2018. The US pharmacy giant CVS announced in March 2019 that it would be selling topical CBD products on its shelves.

Deal Latest in a String of Pro Sports Exploring CBD Products – LPC

The Aurora/UFC research partnership into CBD therapy is not the first of its kind. The NFL and its players’ association announced research into many areas of pain management including CBD and cannabis. The NHL Alumni Association announced a cannabis research project that will explore cannabis as a possible opioid replacement.

The Big3, a professional 3-on-3 basketball league in the US, claims to be the first professional league in the US to allow CBD therapy. It signed a deal with cbdMD to provide THC-free CBD oil products. The deal includes sponsorship with cbdMD logo placement on all player jerseys.

“We did this out of compassion for our guys because CBD can help them without enhancing their performance or having an intoxicating effect. It’s a win win,” said co-founder Jeff Kwatinetz.
