US Chain Starts Selling Cannabis Soaps, Lotions, and Skincare Products

Cannabis-based beauty products Cannabis-based beauty products including skincare and even topical creams are nothing new, but selling them in high-end department stores like Neiman Marcus certainly gives them a higher profile. The Dallas-headquartered giant added a line of beauty products with cannabis ingredients to its luxury lineup, ranging in price from $36 to $120 US.

As the report (click on link below) is quick to point out, they are all made from cannabidiol (CBD) found in hemp, not marijuana.

Kim D’Angelo, beauty buyer for Neiman Marcus, said that CBD is the next “big thing” to hit the beauty industry.

“Everybody is looking for better ways to take care of themselves from the inside out. It’s not just about makeup and skincare,” she said.

D’Angelo said they also carry a line of WelleCo wellness products including dietary supplements and protein powders.

Currently there are three companies in Texas licensed to grow hemp. And although hemp was recently legalized in the United States, there is still confusion about what should be regulated and what shouldn’t be.

Cannabis-Based Beauty Products Still an Unknown for Companies

Dave Donnan, who is a senior partner at A.T. Kearney, a consulting firm for the agriculture industry, said that many companies are nervous about jumping into the CBD market until the US Federal Drug Administration (FDA) clarifies the rules.

“Every retailer we have talked to is looking at it. They just haven’t pulled the trigger,” Donnan said.

Even within Texas, there is confusion. In spring 2018, the Texas Department of State Health Services considered a proposal to detain CBD-based products including edibles and skincare products, even if they didn’t contain the psychoactive ingredient THC. The proposal never went through.

The report also cites other smaller companies like Roots Juices, also based in Dallas, which CBD gummies, smoothies, juices, and capsules. Most are made in Colorado or California. Owner Brent Rodgers said that it’s not surprising that big retailers are entering the market – the only surprise is how long it took.

“I think they’re a little late to the game,” Rodgers said.

Canada, where recreational cannabis is legalized, still does not legally allow edibles, though guidelines for cannabis-based edibles in Canada were recently released.
